mattress topper

Options
Hi
I need a new mattress desperately cos mine's dead uncomfortable, but i haven't really got the money at the mo.

Has anyone ever used the Mattress Topper things you put on top of ur mattress? I thought it might be better to get one of those, but don't know if they work. I've seen em in Argos for about £20.

Anyone know if they're any good?

Most of them are quite thin, best thing is to try & get some foam cut to size & put the topper on top.

We picked up one in Costco and I must say it's made a heck of a difference; feels quite luxurious. Do you turn your mattress over and round regularly?
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

They do vary a lot though, I've seen some really thick ones and some very thin ones. I think the memory foam ones are best but they cost a lot more.

My mattress became uncomfortable too. So I just bought a cheap duvet for about £8 and have that under my sheet it works wonders

    Hi
We needed a new mattress but I need a firm one as I suffer from lower back pain. I bought a 2" memory foam mattress topper that cost about £100 & it's excellent, a lot cheaper than a decent replacement mattress.
I'm not sure about the cheaper sort of topper though, I wonder if you put something firm - hardboard or something - on top of your old mattress & then the £20 topper over that if that would work?

Where did you get it from, Dobie? I have lower back pain too and have been drooling over the idea of a Tempur mattress, but really can't afford it.

Tempur is really the king of mattresses - we've just got a Dunlopillow one which is the next quality down. The difference is in the construction... the salesman told me that if you imagine the mattresses is like a ball pool. When the balls get squeezed by your body the Tempur ones take longer to pop back to shape whilst the Dunlopillow ones pop back faster.

The Dunlopillow is fantastic and worth every penny. I now often wake up in the same position I fell asleep in, no more restless or uncomfortable nights. The added bonus is that it's warmer than normal mattresses so no need for electric blanket or hot water bottles!

The Ikea ones are cheaper but the quality or staying power is not so good. My mum got one for the spare bedroom.

Perhaps the mattress topper would have had a similar effect. The fact that you spend, on average, 8 hours of your day lying on a mattress should be a major influence on what you spend on it.

I looked on the 'I wanna buy it or do it' thread on here. If you type in 'mattress' in the search box there's a couple of suggestions including a web site to order one from.
The first couple of nights it felt a bit strange but you soon get used to it & they really are wonderfully supportive. If I go to bed feeling a bit 'twingy' I wake up feeling great.

    thanx guys

I'll try putting an old quilt on top of the mattress first and see how that feels!!

I've seen the toppers in argos, ranging from £20-£100 i just wasn't sure if they'd be worth the money
