Hard water area ruining my hair, help!

I have recently moved from Cornwall to Berkshire and the one thing I am finding impossible is the hard water! My hair is very curly and is colour treated, so it needs a lot of looking after at the best of times. But now with the hard water it is constantly dull, tangled and gets greasy very quickly. I struggle to get a brush through it after washing it, it doesn't seem to matter how much or little conditioner I use, as it has no effect!

At the moment I just look forward to the trips home to Cornwall to make my hair shiny and nice again, but obviously thats not a long term solution!

Does anyone have any tips on how to help me make my hair my normal again? Thanks in advance :D

Hi Meymore, sorry to hear that the water is causing so many problems! Not sure if this is of any use, but i had to replace a shower head recently and came across the Carewater Vitamin C Showerhead at QVC:

"Enhance your shower experience with this vitamin C shower head and filter set. You'll receive one shower head that produces four different experiences; mist, shower, bubble and massage, and a pack of two vitamin C refills. The vitamin C shower will remove 99.9% of residual chlorine and chloramines in tap water and is lightweight and simple to attach"

    It is Item number 432175:

I have used it myself for a few weeks and have found that it has left my hair feeling more soft and skin feels less dry also...It also has a nice mist function! Hope it works for you!

Many years ago we lived in an area where we had bore water. Had lots of minerals. Was ok to drink etc but it was terrible on your hair. I just would leave a couple of buckets out in the yard when it rained. Decant into other containers and use it to wash my hair. Bit of mucking around but it was so much nicer for my hair.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

You can buy things to attach to your pipes for hard water.

  • You might be able to get round this by changing your shampoo. You need one that has a low level of sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate and a high level of a betaine like cocoamidopropyl betaine. I can't think of any right now but you want one where the betaine is higher on the ingredient listing than the lauryl./laureth sulphate. Simple Shampoo from 20 years ago was like this, but I haven't looked at a pack for years so it may have changed.

  • Hello Meymore
The Vitamin C shower that removes chlorine and other chemicals in the water mentioned by RED does make the water feel softer and definately makes a difference to my skin and hair.
RED mentioned its on QVC but i couldnt find it there so i purchased mine from Prozoneuk
Also seen it on Amazon but was more expensive

How funny! I live in Leicestershire and we have really hard water round here - I find that my hair goes weird when I visit places where they have soft water! It goes all flyaway and light, must be all the limescale that holds it down normally rofl.

I have seen things to fit to your pipes though, and I know some people who do their final rinse with cheap tesco own brand mineral water.

    Good Luck :)
