Advice for male friend - how to find out her ring size...

O.k so one of my friends wants to pop the question. But she has already decided she hates the idea of a dummy ring (this was mentioned after it happened to me) and wants him to pick it.

Problem is he has NO idea what her ring size is. To make it more complicated she only has 2 rings which never leave her hands (for showers or sleep). He cant ask her friends as they will tell her (yes they wouldnt even keep this secret). And he cant ask her parents as they hate him (lol).

So any ideas guys?

Im stumped!!

is she a heavy sleeper?? could he not try and very carefully measure her finger whilst she was asleep? or maybe get a piece of string and measure around and mark with a pen without waking her up.... im sure if he took the piece of string to a shop they would be able to work out ring sizes

cant think of any other ways to do it without it being blindingly obvious what hes doing!

  • I 'admired' a ring one night that my friend was wearing on her ring finger and asked her if I could try it on. She handed it over and it fit me perfectly so I knew what size her now hubby should buy - 12 months later I was their chief bridesmaid as I had been in on it all from the very start.

I cant remember the site, but a popular jewleer has a print out that shows the size of all rings, you get the existing ring and put it on the piece of paper that has lots of ring sizes

hard to explain but it is easist way of finding out

this wasnt exact site, but same idea

    look at image

If she at all possible, I'd recommend buying a ring sizer and get that on her when she sleeps (it wouldn't bee too intrusive - just get her drunk before ;). At least you know you get the right size. so the little extra cost for the sizer is probably saving more as you won't have to pay for resizing.

Otherwise write down how tall she is and what her weight is. A good jewellerer would be able to give you a very good guess based on this.

    Good luck!

I like this way, but if that fails then the string idea should be good. I can't imagine the lady will be too distraught if he's a size or so out though and has to get the ring resized, she'll be far too excited!

Good luck to your friend :D

Hello.. my friend did exactly that to me..

was out on a drunken night out and she put her ring on my finger - having tried it on a few folk as well as me - and she worked out from there what it was.. surely her firends wouldnt tell when its abut an engagegment?

A lot of websites give these free now, I just ordered one from wedding rings direct and I think diamond geezer do them aswell.

I would advise against the piece of string idea - string stretches so you really wouldn't get a good measurement. I like the idea of getting a ring sizer and using it while she is asleep.

My friends husband drew around a plastic ring of hers and ended up with a ring so large that it couldn't be resized, she had to have another ring. Although she didn't mind I know he was a bit dissapointed that the jeweler hadn't mentioned that this was a possibility.

Other option is compare her finger size to his, perhaps his little finger is a similar size... Or ask her friends, surely there is one who can be trusted not to mention it??

My H2B tricked me into taking off one of my rings, which I wear on the ring finger of my right hand, saying that he wanted to mess around with it. He put it on his little finger and made a mental note of how far up it would go.

It turned out pretty accurate. When he popped the question, ring and all, it was only half a size too big (which is better than too small!). The next weekend we went back to the shop in Birmingham's Jewellry Quarter to get it re-sized (for free) and I got to meet the person who had made my engagement ring.

Guess it would just depend on whether he could convince her to take off a ring without her realising what was going on...

i've just got engaged but i never wear rings so he had to guess- it was too big but it didn't matter, i was so excited at getting it back after it was resized it was like being proposed to all over again!

some people prefer their rings slightly looser/tighter so secretly sizing might not work either.

the only problem now is that my ring's too perfect on its own, i don't want to spoil it by adding another, does anyone have any thoughts on using your engagement ring as your wedding ring?
