i feel sick please can you help

I am trying to sort out stuff for my wedding abroad. we go in 2 weeks. My partner and I get married in a catholic church in zante, i am catholic and my partner is CofE. I have sent off baptism, confirmation certs to greece which i presume are ok.

Then I am going through all the formalities and i came across cert of non impediment. I dont know about this. Do i get this from registrar office. Do we both have to go together, how long does it take to get the certificate, have i left it too late

I just feel sick. there is noone to talk to at the moment. I cant get hold of my priest, i have emailed my wedding planner in greece but i dont know what else i can do.

please can anyone help

thanks

    Hi Louise,

I'm sorry, I don't have an answer to your question, but I didnt want to read and run. Have you tried googling certificate of impediment to see what comes up? Is there something on the Foreign Commenwealth Office's website about marrying abroad and what documents are required?

I've been on hols to Zante - its a beautiful place - you will have a fabulous wedding.

    Big hugs

Found this info for you on the Foreign office website

If you live in the UK you can obtain a CNI from your local UK registrar.
You should check with the relevant embassy to see if you need to get your UK CNI translated or legalised for it to be valid in the country where you wish to marry.

Hope you have calmed down, nothing worse than feeling totally stressed and theres no-one to ask for help.

    Hi,

I'm not sure if it's the same thing but I needed to get a Cert of Freedom to Marry for my civil marriage in Greece. These are the details for the Irish version here but might give you some ideas on who to contact in the UK (equivalent to Dept of Foreign Affairs) and what documents you'll need. This says it takes three weeks but mine was done very quickly as I went in in person. I'm sure if you explain your situation it will help speed up the process.

I found the Greek embassy to be very helpful - it might be worth giving them a shout.

    Lastly, congratulations and good luck!

  • Hi Your Certficate of no Impediment you have to get from your local registrar office, yes you would both need to go because you both need to have one. I read somewhere that it apparantly takes upto a month and then it has to be certified and translated into greek. I don't know if there is a way of fast tracking it so it dosn't take as long? You really need to speak to your wedding planner if you can....i can't believe your wedding planner didn't mention it! Sorry i can't be of more help, we were origionally getting married in Greece but changed it to cyprus as i would have been a wreck trying to get all the paperwork sorted! Hope everything works out ok xx

    Hi there,
First things first - don't panic! Its a sunday and you cant do anything until the register offices open tomorrow anyway, so try and not get too worked up!

I used to be a registrar, so the best thing to do would be to put your cards on the table with your local registrar and they'll try and help you as much as possible.
I'm sure once you've spoken with then things will be a little clearer, but until then have a look on the Directgov website for more information.
