Hello all, I have a recipe for the above and it states moderate oven
receipe is hand written from a food fair I went too, on the "dig for victory" stand.
8oz Flour
4oz Butter or veg. marg.
5oz Mixed dried fruit
4oz Sugar
½ teaspoon bi-carb
1 tablespoon vinegar
¼ pint milk
Rub butter into flour
Mix dry ingredients together
Add Bi-carb to milk
and then add vinegar
Mix all together
Bake 1½ hrs until form
"Moderate Oven"
I've added the receipe for others and also, so that you get the whole picture. I'm talking about a gas oven and fruit cakes are about gas mark 2, yet they go up to gas mark 9 so a moderate oven is about 5, to me a cake which take 1½ hrs would burn way before its cooked through.
Hope someone can guide me please.

Hi Linda,
I think it's gas mark 3 or 4. This table should help:

Ooh, that looks like Norfolk Vinegar Cake. I used to make that a lot, it's good. Crumbly and short;) It is an old farm recipe made when the hens were off lay and became popular in the war when eggs were rationed.
A 'moderate oven' is Gas 4 or 180 C0
