Question 20, "how many Spielberg-directed films released during Empire's lifetime (so no Jaws or Raiders) have received five-star ratings on release?", is not as descriptive as it could be. Does it mean a five-star rating from Empire magazine itself? Or a five-star rating from Barry Norman or the entertainment columnist of the Daily Star newspaper?!

(assuming they are including Indiana Jones and Last Crusade, which was released in the US in May 1989, then there has been 15 Spielbergo-directed films released in Empire's lifetime. just need to know where the five-star rating would have come from. i doubt Hook would have got one, hard to say with the others without knowing the criteria for who rated them)

UPDATE: If it is the actual reviews from the magazine itself then, going through their archive, it would be six (amistad, jurassic pork, schindlers list, shaving private ryan, A.I., and munich)

Hi, just wondering how you came to this answer. was looking through the list and...

    Douglas slocombe did films in 77, 81, 84, 89
    ????????
Dean Cundey did films in 91, 93
    Janusz Kaminski did films in 93, 97, 98, 01, 02, 04, 05

So you'd be looking for someone who collaborated with steven spielberg between 77 and 91

This could be Allen Daviau, William A. Fraker or Vilmos Zsigmond.

Also, just looking at my list, ive noticed that

Douglas Slocombe worked with Spielberg in the 70s
    ??????????
Dean Cundey worked with Spielberg in the 90s
Janusz Kaminski worked with Spielberg in the 00s(naughties)

so we could be looking for someone who worked with him in the 80s which would be Allen Daviau.

Dont know if this is right - this one really stumped me, so if anyone has another theory it would be good to hear it, Many Thanks xxx

If you scroll down the list on the right hand side until you come to
    49. Steven Spielberg you can see the 3 names mentioned with William A. Fraker in between Dean Cundey and Janusz Kaminski.

Dont know if this is definately the right answer now lol :rotfl:

I think these are the answers, taken (vaguely!, from here)
#12: Hugo Drax, Ernst Stavro Blofeld

There are 3 names but these two seem to be the most well known.
No idea whether they're right but they're the best I can come up with!

As far as I can tell for q20

Indiana Jones and the last crusade may or may not have been in Empire's lifetime but only got 4 stars.

    Always (1989) got 3 stars

    Hook (1991) 2 stars

    Jurassic Park (1993) 5 stars

    Schindlers List (1993) 5 stars

    Jurassic Park 2 (1997) 4 stars

    Amistad (1997) 5 stars

Saving Private Ryan (1998) 5 stars

    AI (2001) 5 stars

    Minority Report (2002) 4 stars

Catch me if you can (2002) 4 stars

    The terminal (2004) 4 stars

War of the Worlds (2005) 4 stars

    Munich (2005) 5 stars

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (1998) 4 stars

So it looks like the answer is 6
    Prizes:
    2013 - £3,500; 2014 - £8,200; 2015 - £9,300; 2016 - £6,500; 2017 - £9,500; 2018 - £1,600; 2019 - £2,100; 2020 - £2360!
