If you're a big fan of Butternut squash they're on offer in Asda now for 50p each (usually around £1 each). I shopped last night, bought 3 as they have a use by date of 13th May. Great roasted with your Sunday lunch, or soup, or curried......I guess you could cut them up and freeze them?

Roast in oven with orange rind and a bit of orange juice.:T
After boiling, strain water, put back in pot, add a blob of butter and some honey and mash together. Let it cook until it starts to stick to the bottom of the pan and caramelise. Stir and cook a bit more. Careful it doesn't burn.
I am growing my own butternut in our allotment. We did it last year and the difference between home grown and shop bought is unbelievable. We ate loads of butternut and wished we had planted more!.

I've seen these but have never bought one. Can you give me a bit more info on cooking it. I don't even know what it will look like inside.
Do I slice it and cut it into cube? Do I peel of the skin?
Many thanksDoing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......

What To Do With Butternut Squash
Butternut squash is delicious:
steamed: peel, de-seed, cut into 1 inch (2cm) chunks and then steam for 10-12 minutes
boiled: prepare as above and boil for 10-15 minutes
roasted: prepare as above, coat in a tablespoon of olive oil and roast at 180 C (gas mark 6) for 30-40 minutes
soup: add to autumn soup recipes and cook for 15 minutes.0 -

I peel off the skin with a potato peeler, cut the squash in half and scoop out the seeds with a spoon. Then you cut into chunks and use it however you want. Ideas here

Ignore the sell by/use by date - we regularly have these in storage for anything up to 8 months I think has been the longest, usually a good few months though - as long as it's a cool, dry, dark place then they are built to be stored, and taste lovely and cook fine when used still.
To second all the recipes on here already, it's really nice we think and generally have it as a soup, but also as a stuff veg, or just as a roast veg accompaniment.Or as a mash, or mixed with potato and swede as a three veg mash.
Don't have an Asda anywhere near us

I would love to have a go at growing this - is it easy to grow? Do you buy it as a plant or grow it from seeds? Would I be able to plant it now or is it the wrong time of the year?0 -

do you know how long this offer will be on for? I love butternut but can't get to an Asda until Tuesday so I'm hoping it's still on offer then.

Not sure, the reduced prices were on the shelf-edge so I'm guessing they're on offer for a while, I'm popping back in tomorrow to get a few more now I know they'll store for a long time.
