Tax code query

Hi all,

Hope this is posted on the right board and someone here can help? My tax code has just changed from 609L to 653L, but all of my colleagues have 647L. I thought it may have had something to do with a second job I had last Xmas, but am puzzled as to why the higher allowance has been carried over to this year? I don't really want to ring the tax office as my HR dept. have advised, just in case I owe them money!! Does anyone know why I have this code? Have tried looking it up - I don't have any extra allowance for expenses as far as I know as I had seen that could have been a possibility.

Any suggestions would be great!

Just ringng the tax office to ask for a copy of your notice of coding isn't going to alert anyone to an underpayment of tax. This is the only way you are going to answer this question.
I suspect that there is an expense allowance in yur code - maybe from a previous job? What do you do?
Even if yu are no longer due this allowance, the tax underpaid is only £12 for a full year, so there is no way HMRC are going to ask you for this.

Thanks for your quick reply fengirl, I am an adminstrator - no company car or anything! Have heard of people getting an allowance for laundry etc, but that's not something I should benefit from I would have thought.
  • Basically, you have been given an allowance of £60 for something. Anything you spend around this amount that would allowable that you know of? The remainder of the increase is due to the increase in personal allowances.

Mine is 653L i think the extra is for cleaning my own uniform for work.
  • Sounds like you have flat rate expenses of £60 carried forward on your record from your last employment.Write or phone your tax office to have it removed.Won't make a huge difference as it's £60 over 12 months.

If you DO owe them money you will owe it whether you ring or not.
