hring manager access to staff appraisal prior to selection

Hi folks, I would be grateful for your advice. In my company, whenever staff wish to apply for internal vacancies (ie. on level transfer or on promotion) they have to apply for these jobs and submit two years of previous performance appraisals.

I am not sure if this is the right way. Do you have any views on this please?

I feel that I should be able to apply for the jobs with an application form and CV rather than send my staff appraisals.

Thanks. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

It's standard practice for internal vacancies in every organisation I have worked in that appraisals go in with cvs etc

Are you concerned about poor ratings?

Hi, no my ratings are pretty good but I fear some comments by line manager could go against me. I just feel that in general this is unfair. Some people who gets on with their line managers or have a more outward personality would progress faster than people like me with a disability and quiet nature.

generally interview is based on cv/ application form for shortlisting.

we tend to only look at appriasals with poorer ratings 9too busy to read them all in depth!) to see if there are mitigating circumstances.

I wouldnt stress about it too much.

If this is the case, then you need to address the negative comments at the time of the appraisal. If these comments are as a result of your disability, then they are unsuitable and possibly unlawful, depending on the situation.

I do agree with Emmzi, this process is common. The issue should be the potentially unfair comments made in the appraisal process, not the future use of the appraisal document.

Any company that does not look at past performance when giving out promotions/transfers is on a hiding to no-where.

Agree with Bozo. OK OP your appraisal might be good - what about Joe Bloggs who has been told that he's underperforming and is on performance management - should he just be able to apply like an outsider, with the company closing their eyes to his current performance?

We can all look wonderful on a cv, harder to do so on an appraisal when someone else is able to comment.

But agree that anything inappropriate should be challenged at the time of the appraisal. Currently supporting a friend who after six months with a new LM had a disastrous AA with no prior warning that anything was wrong!
