Can you get a mortgage on a temporary contract?

My husband is the sole wage-earner in our house at the mo as I am at home with 2 children and he has just started a new job as a civil servant. He has been there a month and is on a one-year contract for now. We own our current home with no mortgage but would like to move in the next year or so and have a mortgage again (bigger house).

What are the chances of getting a mortgage (about 3 times his salary)? Nil?

Any information would be gratefully received.

But it will depend on the whole scenario, not just the contract part
