BEWARE: Sky TV subscription payments
sieve
Until recently I had Sky TV and Broadband - cancelled this last week. My payment method was listed as my co-op cashminder electron card, as I wanted a bit more control over things and didn't want to risk bouncy direct debits, knowing what co-op's policy was with 3 strikes and you're out.
When I went bankrupt, I had £68 outstanding to Sky. The OR told me not to use my cashminder account as I had the Barclays one - fine. All was fine until the phone started ringing today from the co-op.
Sky have today somehow managed to take £68 out of my cashminder account using my electron card details, leaving the account £68 overdrawn. This is not going to look good to the OR when I speak to them tomorrow and of course I now have this debt to the co-op which I need to pay. Wonderful.
So a very big word of warning - DO NOT think that just because your account doesn't have anything in it, that companies are unable to charge subscription payments to your electron card, because they can.
I will tell the OR what has happened during my interview tomorrow but I am pretty certain there's not a lot they will be able to do as the debt now lies with the co-op, after the BR date, and it looks like I have deliberately been using the account as well so no doubt I will get a hard time for that.
Just what I needed in the run up to my interview. F****** Sky.:mad::mad::mad:

It never rains it pours ,, sorry to hear your predicament .. How do you get on with OR good i hope .. You are probabaly notthe only one to get caught and they will know0

This is very odd as I thought there was no overdraft facility on the Cahsminder with the Co-op, so they wouldbe entitled to refuse payment. Thanks for posting, need to watch out.Bankrupt 11th June 2008

Yeah that's what I was banking on (pardon the pun) - I was gobsmacked when I found that you can in fact get overdrawn with an Electron card. Hopefully my OR will be able to reverse the transaction as it's not as though I deliberately paid them (even though I could theoretically be held accountable)...BR 08/04/09 | ED 02/10/09

I thought the whole point of an electron card was that if there were no funds the payment couldn't go through. I'm not sure I'd be cross with Sky, but more so with co-op, dare I say - as i love them so far!0

I had something similar but with a credit card - I was redundant and it was being paid by the insurance so I wasn't allowed to use it (in fact had cut it up) but the caravan club (who I was no longer a member of) managed to get a subscription from it!!! Its the only thing to appear on my CC in the last year so bet I get asked about it!BR 08/06/09 ED 10/03/10BSC member 2500

I had this with a prepay credit card. I took out an annual subscription for the AA and when the renewal came I ignored it thinking that there was no money they couldnt take it but they did and I ended up overdrawn why, because it was a subscription. Money Talks ...but all mine ever says is Goodbye! :rolleyes:0

Sorry to hear what has happened with the Co-op, a few years ago I had a standing order going out, can't remember to who (sorry me age) So I went on-line with co-op's internet banking and cancelled this SO. It came up cancelled, plus I did it a few day earlier.
I then check my account and blow me they tried to send the standing order out, not once but twice:eek: because I didn't have enough funds available, they charged me £19.50 TWICE..................
I thought £39 and not my fault, so got on to them, anyway thankfully they realised it was their fault, removed the charges and I also got a £15 compensation paid in my account.
Be careful with this account as it can take a while for their balance to show a true figure, you can use your Electron card in a shop and it doesn't show on your internet banking for about 2 days.
It's best to write it down and then knock it off the balance showing.

PS Good luck with the OR, it wasn't your fault. x0 -
It is never a good idea to have standing payments with debit/credit cards because they are so hard to cancel and you cannot cancel them with the bank - you have to cancel them with the company so if you have a dispute they keep on taking payments and with a debit card you really have no recourse. I learned that lesson the hard way.

These agreements are called CPAs Continuous Payment Authority.
I work for a bank and they cause so many complaints.
You or even your bank cannot control them. Only the company can control them. In most cases, even cancelling the card doesnt stop them !
Always pay by d/d or bgc where you can.0 -
the best way to cancel them is to tell the bank your card has been lost and then they will send you a new card with a differant card number on it
