    Hi again Shariatlanta.
This happened in our hospital years ago when the Trust wanted to change from the old 12 hr nights to 3 shift working.
I am sure you know there is a lot of research to show that 12 hr shifts are less productive but many staff prefer them.
We (Union reps) advised the staff who wanted to keep their old shift patterns to dig their heels in and they did keep their old working patterns.Remember, this is your contract...an agreement between you and your employer. Don't be frightened if your manager tries bullying tactics because there's a policy for that as well! You should make use of the Work/Life balance, Flexible Working policies which your Trust should have in place as part of the Government's Improving Working Lives movement which all Trusts should be adhering to.
I am sure they would rather hang onto a valuable member of staff than try and find someone else with your skills.
You should not be worse off!
Under the Working Time Directive the minimum rest period you are entitled to is 20 minutes after a six hour shift. But, this is a Health and Safety issue and you could argue that you are not working safely if you don't get more, especially in such an intensive work environment.
Incidentally, one good thing with the change to enhanced hour payments (if they ever get it sorted out) is that you will receive them while on holiday or off sick which you don't at the moment(an average based on your level of unsocial hours worked). Also, you are now entitled to overtime pay if working more than full time hours and not time off in lieu which, as anyone in the NHS knows, never happens.
Please join a union. I am not in Unison but all the unions in our Trust work well together.
You are a really important person to your employer so let them know how you feel.
    Good luck.
