Alternatives to sugar filled yoghurt?

I was pretty shocked to see that one of my low fat, fruit yoghurts (£1 for six) contained a quarter of my recommended daily amount of sugar. Does anyone know of any healthier alternatives? I can't really afford to spend a lot but I do enjoy eating them and they are very handy for transporting to work for packed lunches.
Any ideas gratefully received!

Hi bluestarlight,
Welcome to MSE :hello:
The best way to reduce the sugar in your yoghurt is to make your own. These threads should give you some ideas on how to go about it:

The only alternatives will probably contain artificial sweeteners!
Mind you how much of the sugar was naturally occurring sugars from the fruit rather than added sugar?.....0 -
I buy Sainsbury's Basics Natural Yogurt 500g and I squish in a few frozen raspberries I've defrosted. Tastes really good and lasts me five days. I think what most people do is take a spoon of preserves/jam and use it to flavour it but the squished fruit works for me.0

You can add runny honey to sweeten natural yogurt or agave nectar that comes in a squeezy bottle too, all easy to take to work with you to add to natural yogurt..much better than sugar, low GI in Agave nectar too! Hope this helps!0

I used work for a couple of well known yogurt manufacturers in the department that made the actual yogurt (ie before the fruit was added).
The unfruited sweetened yogurt made by the bigger company contained around 10% sugar. Once the fruit was added it was between 13% & 15% iirc. It maybe less these days, I stopped working in the dairy industry about 10 years ago.
The other company I worked for was Yeo Valley. I don't recall what the sugar was in the unfruited sweetened yogurt at YV but it was less than the other place.
These days I'll only eat yogurt made by YV (although I do know how to spot the own brand stuff they've made for the supermarkets).
As for the original question, unsweetened natural yogurt with fruit and or honey or sugar. If you use preserves, don't add too much. In the factory the fruit conserve is around 15% by weight, ie 130g of yogurt + 20g conserve but you might find that is too much at home. My favourite is a couple of teaspoons of lemon curd.

Thank you thats very helpful
I think I'll buy some small re-useable pots and add frozen fruit to natural yoghurt.0 -

I love YV yogurts as well - any chance you can tell us how to spot the own brand ones?;):DWhen life hands you lemons, ask for tequilla and salt and give me a call!!!0 -
ASDA do a 500ml natural yogurt for approx. 50p0

I stew wrinkly apples, or rhubarb, in the microwave and add either a little sugar (or honey with the rhubarb) and serve with the natural yoghourt from Asda.
Your very own fruit corners!
