Buying specs online, accurate PD measurement, how ?

Hi, I have purchased prescription glasses on line before but when I fill in the order form with my prescription details, I am instructed that if was not given my PD measurement (the distance between my pupil centres) by the person who carried out the eye test then I should just leave the relavent box blank or default.
After speaking to a friend who's relative is an optician they said that an accurate PD measurement is vital in the preparation of the lenses of your glasses. Apparently opticians are not obliged to supply you with the PD measurement.
Can any one tell me if they have been to a high street optician that was happy to supply their PD measurment after their eye test.
Thanks

I have used the default provided by online suppliers and all as fine. If you google how to pd measurement then you will find some guidance on how to do this at home.0

I went back to Specsavers with my prescription (which they did in the first place) and asked them for PD. They did it no problem.0
