You can claim back overpaid tax, going back up to 6 years. Although the tax office may have some of your income details, I would advise, for each year you wish to make a claim, you send full details of what you were doing for the tax year ie dates you were employed/unemployed/claimed benefit/full time education. I would also send any P45's and P60's you have that confirms your income. They will need to be the originals but I would take a photocopy of each, for you to keep, in case they go astray.0

When in the tax year did you start this new job (i.e. start of the year in April, end of the year in March)? When you say emergency tax do you mean a basic rate (BR) tax code or a month1/week1 code? Did you stay in employment/are you still employed? If so did your employer put you onto a cumulative tax code? If they did, were you put onto the cumulative tax code before the end of the tax year?
Just asking these questions because you might have actually had your money back already. The tax office you need to speak to depends on your current employers tax reference. The first the numbers determin which office holds your record. I.e 948/z135m - the 948 indicates the record is held by South Wales. You need to find out this number and go on the HMRC website to find out who deals with your record.0 -
Hi
For woolworths - permantely on BR code
for teaching - permenant BR code
temp work - BR code
Norwich Union - was on BR then put onto a tax code but not a cumulative one. I am now on a cumulative tax code but this is only in the new tax year.
I started at NU in july and was on BR til November!Crafting for 2009 items doneOne patchwork blanket, two neck supports, one tea cosy, one knitted bunny, one knitted egg!0 -
Your records should be held at the tax office that deals with your latest employer so your employer should be able to tell which tax office to write to.
If you have always been coded BR and never had a rebate you should be looking at a fair bit of tax back. I wonder why you have never had any tax free personal allowance?0 -
i dont know whats happened with why I have been on BR, because I have only been doing part time work due to studying ive never noticed but now i have gone to work full time we have unravelled the whole sorry mess!!Crafting for 2009 items doneOne patchwork blanket, two neck supports, one tea cosy, one knitted bunny, one knitted egg!0

I found it depended on the employer's payroll department whether you were given the right tax code eventually while employed or not.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
