However, I am wondering whether this is not simply a reflection that those were the largest cards around when the camera was originally manufactured (a year or two back). Do any of the tech gurus happen to know whether there is any reason why a camera would not be able to take a larger cpacity card ??

Some may NOT support larger sizes due to the way they are manufacured. The operating system of the device may be instructed to only look for a maximum amount of memory and will be unable to access more even if it's there.

The only reason I can think of for manufacturers to continue with this is to help along built-in obsolescence.

This may be of use to someone. I find their delivery a bit slow but reliable.

I think you are right about the 'largest cards around'. Most cameras will take 1Gb without a problem. Also just because a camera (or MP3 player or whatever) doesn't work with a particular card, doesn't mean that it is the size that is the problem. Some devices simply don't get on with some cards, but the Viking ones are normally OK - mostly made by Toshiba, I believe.

Note that there is an upper limit of 2GB for the filing system (FAT) used by these things. This also used to be true of computers and hard drives!
