Flies!

Hiya,
I live right on the River, and this time of year the flies start coming in. When its warm I have all the windows open (Sash windows) and get alot of flies coming in.
Ive tried Fly traps, then ones you hang up and they stick too, they dont go near it. My house is clean btw, everyone around mine that lives on the river seems to get them every year.
Ive been looking for something that actually works. Ive heard that Citronella is meant to be good, but cant seem to find where sells it (High Street).
Any ideas on how to get rid of them?
