When to get a Saturday job?

Hi,
I am looking for some advice, I am currently saving up for my wedding and work full time as an administrator that pays 'average' wages but I want to do something on my Saturday off that will earn me some extra cash.
Thing is, I dont know what to do! Can anyone suggest something that pays a bit more than the minimum wage?
Also, if I was to go for a job in retail- when is the best time to apply? I know that students come and go at certain times of the year but I have no idea when this is? Can anyone advise? It may mean I have a better chance of getting a retail job when they all go home for the summer!
All suggestions and helpful advice, greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes I have just realised how dense my header looks now- thanks for that
What I mean is, there are better times of the year than others to apply for a saturday job ie. when the students arnt around and I am likely to be more successful in my application!:j :jTotally and utterly debt free as of 27/05/09!!!:j :j0 -
As soon as the students finish (early to mid June) they will all start looking for jobs so it will be really busy then. After that the A level and GCSE students finish (late June) and will probably be looking for work too. Students will probably be after full time weekday jobs but will take anything. I would say now and in next few weeks would be a good time to look as this is dissertation and revision season and I would guess people might be dropping work to free up study time, especially if about to graduate. How about bar or catering work at weekends?
Waitressing work might get you some good tips.
Any tourist sites near you? With summer coming up a theme park, museum, sea side shop might be good.0 -
Generally speaking most Uni students will be likely to go home for the summer, so if you're in or near a university town (most major cities are these days really) you might want to look towards summer - june as a few others have said. Actually, start hunting now even - some students who can (just) afford to, might have packed in their jobs already due to time needed for finals etc.
Of course then there are the awkward students like me and my housemates to be, who are staying 12m a year! I'll be looking for my student job in july when i move!On the up

Why not try to get work in a wedding shop - wages may not be great but you might get a staff discount that would help to pay for some of the things you need for your wedding.
Also they tend to be busier on a Saturday so might need extra staff just on those days.0 -

I would get a CV ready and start heading into retailers about mid May and just approach them personally, even if they don't have vacancies at that moment ask them to hold your CV for if they take on staff over the summerNever Say Die I've tried it and it doesn't actually make people die0 -
As Moonbeam pointed out look for jobs where the staff discount could be useful, the discount scheme at the job I work is worth £500+ a year to me.
A lot of companies now post their vacancies and deal with applications exclusively on their websites, for many High St stores the days of going in and handing over a CV are gone. Make a list of retailers with recruitment sites and visit them regularly, daily if possible. The job I got appeared online one morning so I applied for it straight away and within 24 hours had signed the contract
Try and think if other options would suit, e.g. I do a 5pm to 8pm weekday shift because this is harder for the store to cover than weekend shifts when there are loads of students available. It might mean weekdays are tiring but you'd still get a proper 2 days rest. Also consider working Sunday instead of Saturday, many retailers pay 1.5 times basic rate for Sundays, you can easily earn £10 p/h shelf stacking that way
Sadly jobs in retail are scarce at the moment, I work for a very profitable store but there is an overtime ban, if someone leaves they won't be replaced, and even students that normally come back in the holidays aren't required. A total difference to last year when they would get extra staff in for busy times of the year.0
