Tax Rebate/P60 advice.

Hi there,
Bit of background on my situation:

I was working from Feb 07-Nov08 for an employer. I was made redundant in Nov - leaving on a salary of 19,500 p.a.
From April 07- April 08 my PAYE/JSA earnings have been as follows (before tax):

Employement £11000 approx
Redundancy £1500 approx
JSA £700 approx

Total: £13200

I signed off JS on 23rd Feb as I got some freelance work. I have registered as self employed but have recieved no documents etc. from hrmc yet.

My self-employed earnings are £4500 for year 07/08. but as I havent filled in any assessment forms i assume this prob not be taken into account yet.

I was hoping someone could tell me if they thought I was entitled to a rebate and where I would get a p60 from - should I phone HRMC directly? I also study with the OU and need to send them my year-end earnings as it affects my financial support for study.
I am hoping this wont be a problem next year as I have just started a full-time job so will be on PAYE - much more straight forward!

Thanks in advance,

Sara

  • Hi,

Your redundancy probably won't be classed as taxable income depending on how long you were with the firm. I should imagine you won't get a rebate as your self employed income won't have been taxed at source. You will more than likely owe tax (unless you have a lot of expenses to put against it).

As for the P60 - you are not entitled to one as you were not working for the employer at 5th April. You will instead have had a P45.

    Hope this helps.

Before we answer this, I think we need clarification on your dates.
First of all you state you left work in Nov 08 and then you state that you had redundancy and JSA in 07-08 - I think you mean 08-09.
Assuming that is the case, you will need to self assess for 08-09 including all your income (but not the redundancy as this is not taxable). You wont get a P60 as you were not employed at 5/4/09, so you will need to use your P45 figures and you should also have been given a P45 when you signed off.
Impossible to say what refund you will get without accurate income figures and, last but not least...tax paid figure!

    Hi Barrie,

Thanks very much for the reply. Yes, I will definately owe on the s-e earnings but was hoping maybe it will not be too much if they take into consideration that I didn't earn as much as predicted in 08/07. So, once I fill in my self assesment i should get a certificate/notifcation of earnings for the year (just thinking about my OU stuff)?
    Cheers,
    Sara

Fengirl - yes, my mistake JSA was 08/09.

Will do my self-assessment and see what happens :) A wee refund would be nice after all the trauma this year!

One other thing - do you know how long it takes for HRMC to register someone as self-employed. I filled in the form on line weeks ago but havent heard anything back.

    Thanks for the help!

Just realised there - i got a p45 when i left my employment but there was no figures on it. It was blank apart from my name etc. I should be able to work it out from wages slips though.
