careful when using gumtree to sell stuff

Options
have had a few enquiries about a copule of items I had for sale, that turned out to be the usual 'give me your bank details for payment' etc..

dont they realise people are on to them, by now??

a give away is when you get an email asking if 'the item' is for sale, and no contact number- or even a number that looks like a (UK) mobile, but isnt..

There's no problem at all with giving bank details out to a customer, safest way to receive payment. It's when they want you to send them money the same way it becomes problematic, or when they want to send extra money by Western Union which you can claim as soon as you send tracking details showing goods were sent.

i thought the whole idea of gumtree was to keep things local, and deal face to face (as per their safety guidelines..)

  • I put some Oasis tickets on Gumtree for their Manchester gig, yet I got an email supposedly from the states in pretty bad english saying that

"i will give them my bank details they will send a check and they will send their personal courier round to collect them and this is not a scam by the way"
    - more or less that.

I responded, "The very fact that you say "this is not a scam" when nobody has even suggested that it is suggests that it is indeed a scam and I want nothing to do with it." Perhaps shouldnt have even dignified it with a response
