My mother-in-law has just sold her home about 100 miles away and is buying a property closer to us for up to £180,000.
The sale of her old home is dealt with and everything's in hand.
We will just need a solicitor locally to tie up the legalities of her new purchase in our neck of the woods.
What are solicitor's fees likely to be on property purchase only?

I paid £730 purchase only; that did not include disbursements, surveys or stamp duty. With a structural survey and disbursements it was approximately £1500.

I paid £745.00 to the solicitor, this included searches and chancel repair insurance.
Survey was £260.00
Mortgage fee £595.0 -

Fees for dealing with flat purchases are normally higher than for houses because more work is involved. There also tend to be fees that are quite specific to the lease itself which a solicitor cannot know beforehand because they are fixed by the lease or specified by some third party such as managing agent, e.g. Landlord's Notice Fee - could be anything from nil to £300.
Best thing to do is to Google "Conveyancing Solicitor [Name of your town]", ignore the sponsored links and crummy local directories and go to the actual solicitors' websites. That will tell you something about them and may give you an impression of what they are like - check any "terms and conditions" that appear on obscure page sof the site. Then phone some of them up and ask for an estimate, with a full breakdown of figures and be careful to get it all in writing and then read all the small print.RICHARD WEBSTER
