Keeping fruit n veg fresh for as long as possible

does anyone have any tips on how to prolong fruit n veg? Im sick of throwing friut n veg out or eating loads of fruit n veg within 2 days of shopping and then living of frozen food for the rest of the week. Also, I cant stand veg when its going past its best.

I just threw out a few pieces of salad which I just bought on Saturday!

Any hints would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Not used these myself, but have read about special bags that are for sale in Home Bargains - apparently they are excellent at keeping fruit and veg fresh. I think they sound worth a try!

I found the thread with the info on...

My daughter bought me some that are cream fabric with black lining. They're 3 different sizes & labelled, "potatoes," "veg," & "mushrooms."
    They really do work too!
I think they're from Klee-eze, but will check next time we chat.

Yes they advertise the bags on tv. Didn't know HB sold them.

I have a couple of the battery operated ionic preservers from QVC (Genius air). They seem to work well, certainly stops the fridge smelling of cauliflower and keeps things fresh longer.

I also keep my bananas in the fridge so they last at least a week+ if bought slightly green. I have 5 paperbags inside each other then keep them in the salad box at the bottom of the fridge. You can buy banana bags from Lakeland but my mum made her own from a tea towel and some fleece type padding.
  • where do you keep it at the moment?

I can only shop on a saturday but I put all my stuff in the bottom of the fridge and it keeps the full week...except root eg which i wrap in newspaper and keep in a cool dark cupboard.

  • I use stay fresh bags from Lakeland - I put all my fruit and veg in them and they stay fresh for 2 weeks or more.
Have an iceburg lettuce in one which has been there over 2 weeks now and going strong!:D
Works better with things that dont have a high moisture content and i take the fruit/veg out every couple of days to wipe away any moisture in the bag- this seems to help keep them fresh for even longer.

Just wish i could find them in HB- much cheaper!

    hi,

yep we bought some of the JML fresh bags a couple of weeks ago - my husband is doing a carrot experiment!!! They seem to be keeping fresher in a normal freezer bag than in the JML things!
Also we have just bought a new fridge and the salad was in the salad bowl at the bottom - I couldnt believe the bag of chopped salad we bought had gone off already - Im sure it was a duff bag!

I bought a pack of the JML green bags (half price in Wilkinsons) They seem useful in containing bananas, stop the banana smell escaping all over the fridge, and I think banana gas ripens other fresh fruit. But generally they aren't that miraculous and I keep finding wet forgotten things in the fridge. I line the salad drawer with paper towel or serviettes to soak up any moisture. In the past I've tried various liner gadgets that all ended up slimy and chucked out. Dh stands his celery in a glass of water.

i bought some plastic tupperware type containers from QVC and although i was sceptical at first i have to say it keeps fruit/veg fresh for a long time , ive had tomatoes/carrots/mushrooms keep for 3 weeks.
