    I got a 3% annual pay rise.

    Fair enough.

And then a £500 per annum promotion pay rise for the next grade.

    Any thoughts?

  • Yes that its entirely common for anyone to get a cost of living rise per annum (the 3%) and in some organisations an increment until they reach the top of the scale range.

You havent achieved a pay rise, you have simply been told what you would get regardless of you feeling aggrieved or not.

My last promotion was a 2.5% payrise onto the next available increment on the new grade...

Which equates to about 900 smacks a year...FWIW

It's not much for a promotion but how things are at the moment it's better than nothing I guess. I can't help but think that even firms who are doing well through this recession are using the general situation as an excuse to make employees feel eternally grateful for what they've got.

At least now you are on a new grade and have plenty of scope for the future. If they are giving out annual pay rise of 3% then they must be doing okay so things are going to be pretty secure for you.
