Job Offer between myself and another person, Help?

Firstly i posted this on the wrong board (redundancy) is there anyway I can get that post removed so its not on twice?

Hi everyone,

I have been for an interview today (assistant Manager at a charity shop) and had a call tonight that the job offer is between myself and another person, they asked if I could go in next week for a work trial type thing for the day. I really want this job, so what I'd like to ask is, is there anything I can do to get the edge over the other person? I know thats sound's awful on the other person but I really need this job, I'm not even sure if we are not both going to be there together on the same day either, and that I would find a bit stressful, competing with someone else all day.
So if anyone could give me any tips that would be great :T
I did post about a month ago about help with my first interview in years after a long spell as a stay at home Mum, so I'm VERY rusty at this sort of thing.

Thanks in advance

Michelle x

I am sure you will get lots of tips. here are two to start with.
Be there early and standing outside the shop when the manager/key holder turns up.
Wear flat shoes as shop work involves a lot of standing. (Do not mention during the day back ache, leg ache and do not sit down unless on a break or "invited" to by the manager.)

    Thats great, thank you gfplux
  • Be as helpful as possible and do whatever is asked of you to do as best as you can. Keep asking questions and if you find yourself not doing anything offer to help on anything else.

If you are going to make coffee/tea for yourself then also offer the manger one too.

I've worked in a charity shop as an assistant manager.Try to be as helpful as possible, and make sure you ask questions about the charity they are supporting. Push the "brand" items (pins/badges/cards etc) as its usually pure profit for the charity. Be extra nice to the manager as although they dont wield the power of a normal retail store manager their opinion will be the deciding factor. Oh and offer to help sort the donations, its not a nice job (honestly what I saw come in whilst working there... ) and the manager will want to see you are prepared to get your hands dirty.
One last thing, smile no-one wants to have someone work front of house who is a misery (not saying you are but its still worth mentioning)

Thanks for that BlameTheGame , I wasn't sure about asking questions as I didn't want them to think I didn't know what I was doing, but yeah, that makes me more interested in the job?
  • what about visiting the 'competition' so to speak and see what is good / bad about their shops?

(not saying you should go in and suggest changes but might give you some ideas if asked how you would improve things)
