I posted somewhere else about closing a Next account. They don't actually "close" it, they just stop you using it! Their excuse is that you might want to start using it again!

So, I persisted on the phone and they finally agreed to properly close it, including updating my credit record. They got quite snotty and abrupt, telling me that I could NEVER have a Next account with them again because I was closing it down. Thank goodness for that I thought! :rotfl:

The tip is not just to ask to close it, but for your credit record to be updated with settled - that's the only way.

Oh, and they said no-one had ever asked for this before! Biggest pile of poop I've ever head!

My advice is either steer totally clear of ever opening a Next account, or if you've got one, pay it off and close it completely with the credit report settlement line.

If you read the closure letter you got - it doesn't actually say they've closed it, but "sorry to hear you wish to close it". Enough difference for them not to be doing anything wrong.

I too have a credit limit of £3600 with Next which is ridiculous as I only ever order £100 worth of goods max, but it is paid off when the bill comes in, due to the massive amount of interest they pile on.

I have phoned 4 times now to get them to reduce the credit limit, to no avail, still shows a credit lilmit of £3600.

Each and every single person I have spoken too, has treated me like an aliean, for wanting my credit limit reduced - in fact this thread has reminded me to phone them again ...........

I've had this trouble with NEXT as well.

After realising that I also had a £3600 credit limit I phoned and asked it to be dropped to £400. Still high in my opinion but you never know there might a time when I need it. Guy on the other end was gobsmacked that anyone would even want to reduce their limit...I think his words were something like 'we don't get many phone calls asking to reduce our limit'!

Anyway after I'd been charged another £3.50 for another catalogue that I won't order from as NEXT does believe that people can be short and larger than a size 18, I phoned to cancel. Whilst waiting to be put through I glanced at my statement and noticed that it was still £3600. So when I eventually got through I queried this. Basically NEXT had unilaterally decided to ignore my request and my limit was still £3600. So I blew my stack with them and told them that I wanted my account closed. HOWEVER they wouldn't do this for 84 days just in case I changed my mind.

What is with NEXT that they don't understand the words "please close my account now?"

Right, I've had enough so I've just submitted my complaint to Watchdog online, so lets hope they respond and I can take it further as speaking to Next and writing to them has not made a blind bit of difference.

I got caught in the street by one of these catalogue people at Christmas. Didn't think anything of it, then I got a Next catalogue through the post. Still didn't think anything of it til I got a letter from them claiming I owed them £3.50 for the catalogue!

Immediately rang them up and said in no uncertain terms that they weren't getting anything off me since I never actually said I wanted the catalogue. The lady was very surprised since (according to her) the catalogue survey people aren't supposed to indicate you want a catalogue unless they've told you you'll have to pay for it (not that I beleived that). So in the end, she said OK, send us back the catalogue and we'll close your account. I said no, I'm not sending back the catalogue since it would cost more than £3.50 for postage. So then she told me to bin the catalogue.

Thought I'd won, but then I got another letter saying that the spring/summer catalogue was on it's way to me. Rang them again and repeated the process. They sent me a pre pay envelope to put the new catalogue in.... but so far it hasn't arrived.

But now I've read this, maybe I should ring them back and make sure they've closed the 'account'......

What really bugs me about the next thing is that if you want to buy an item you HAVE to open a credit account. If you live in the sticks like me and can't get to a next store then you are stuffed. I am going to close mine as the temptation to order is too much (or used to be). Now that I am better educated I will never order off them again

You go girl! I've always wondered about opening a Next account but after reading this thread there's NO WAY I'm going to do that now.

Let us know how you get on with the watchdog thing.

    Fascinating thread this.

If you get a minute, look up the Data Protection Act online. I'm not sure which it is but one of the guiding principles is that any personal data stored by an organisation should only be held as long as it is relevant nad not forever as they seem to be.

If it's been more than two years since you had something, that's more than enough for it to be deemed no longer relevant.

If they still hesitate to remove you, simply take the operators name and then confirm you will report them and the organisation to the Office of The Information Commissioner and hang up. Do report them. Next will change shortly afterwards.
