Help! My son can type 'boobs'

My 7 year-old son has learnt to spell, which I was happy about until I saw he'd typed 'boobs' on youtube yesterday. He uses the same computer as me but on a non-admin account (my admin account's password protected).

The inbuilt IE 'Content' security doesn't seem to work - I logged on as my son and googled a couple of terms and oh-la-la. Any ideas - eg free program downloads - on how to block content for my son only without, ah-hm, blocking me too?

Thanks all
Bertie

or if you have vista, the parental controls (in control panel) may help
  • Thanks Gaming Guy - do you if this program will affect the computer as a whole or can it be applied only to user accounts (my son's) I select? Also, I work from home connecting to my office on a VPN - I assume this won't be affected.

    Some routers have keyword blocking.

yes, but that won't work on a VPN.

    bertietheblue:
if you log onto a domain (ie: start the comp up, press control+alt+del to log on), then there may be policies that prevent software installation. K9 only protects the local computer (ie, your machine), so it shouldnt affect the network/VPN

I assume K9 does it for all accounts, but i'm sure theres something that allows you to enter a password to bypass the block.

That assumes the internet is routed through the work servers permanently.

IIRC K9 is computer wide, but it does allow you enter a password to get to past it to the content you need/want ?

Ok for a 7 year old, but my 14 year has found a way round it which I'm not party to yet

At the end of the day, no "net nanny" type software is foolproof and people need to accept that.

OpenDNS is your friend. Again, not totally foolproof but if implemented correctly it does give pretty good protection.

I agree; he needs to do what he's told (presumably you've told him not to type naughty words into the computer), and you need to personally supervise his computer usage. There aren't any computer programs that will do it for you.
