eating meat in season??

hi all

we grow most of our own veg and so eat veg that is in season most of the time, and i buy mince, shoulders of pork, lamb etc from the butcher ....

BUt are particular cuts of meat in season at particular times of year? i guess they are but i am not as aware of the seasonal nature of meat as i am of veg....

i know that cuts of meat are available all year round - as they are cured, or frozen - but is there a particular time when they are more readily available and perhaps cheaper?
does this make sense?

anyone know a website to find out what meat is in season?

Not sure that meat has a season.

Maybe lamb as it is born at a certain time of year, so should be ready to eat at a certain time of year, and if they miss that time it will become mutton.

Cows and pigs, I believe, give birth at any time so their offspring can be ready to eat at any time of the year.

Maybe something that is hunted will have "a season", like grouse, but animals that are farmed probably don't. They are born then slaughtered as soon as they reach the required weight.

I know lamb's in season in spring. I don't know much about it but am guessing that's lambs born the previous year, at about 10 months to a year old?

My guessing is if you buy local you will get to know whats available when - if that makes sense - and then you can buy accordingly? Just a thought.

I live on an island and only buy local produce where I can - so if you have a good local butchers or have a local farm shop who do meat they will be able to keep you right.

Thing about meat is that animals are fattened for slaughter around the year as others have said - aside lamb (which does have a season) our producers supply most things most of the year round - although the last local chicken I got was very small - and they did say it was the last of the chickens for this year until the new ones were ready.

I'm not quite sure what you mean A proper butcher sells fresh meat all year round. Meat is reared and slaughtered all year round. Spring lamb is seasonal and so is game of course, certain types of poultry like geese may only be available for the Christmas market but otherwise you can buy meat at any time of the year.
