Needless to say I went BR not long after :rotfl:
Your creditor was clearly not HSBC I guess then, as when I did my I & E with them pre BR they suggested all sorts of cut backs from already slashed amounts to live off. They didn't get it when I said I ran out of money 2nd or 3rd week into every month and had to use candles for lighting on occasions when electric meter ran out. They still went on to suggest ways to cut back! Boy do I miss them - NOT!!!!:rotfl:0 -

No, it was barclaycard, they led me into a false sense of security though. When they were doing I&E they said they realsied I had no spare income, but it didn't stop them phoning me several times a day though when I didn't pay them! And no, I don't miss those phone calls :rotfl:BSC No: 2450 -
I spoke to debt free direct for my mum, but seeing some of the comments on here now i think I should contact a different company.
As someone else mentioned, "Debt Free Direct" are not a charity, they're a company out to encourage people to take on IVAs to "free themselves from debt". Don't be fooled, they do this to make money and lots of it. My understanding is that they take more cash from an IVA than the actual creditors in many cases.
You MUST speak to CCCS, National Debtline or CAB - They won't try to sell you anything, they'll simply try to offer the best advice they can. BR sounds like a viable option if they have no assets to protect.“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”

Hi Clare1985
Well done you for supporting your parents & trying to help them out like this ....you deserve a great big <<<HUG>>> !!!
As others have said....get impartial FREE advice from the free charities (CCCS, Nat Debtline, CAB)....never ever go to a fee paying organisation like DFD (anyone got a picture of a circling vultures??) ....they are just preying on the vulnerability of those who are in debt panic.
Here is a link to a CAB site that has a fantastic debt self help section....it is a great reference source.

Your parents will be able to sort this situation themselves with your help. Hopefully finding this forum will help you to realise that they are not alone.

You could also go to www.cccs.co.uk and try their debt remedy. They then give you a personal number so when you do ring them thy have all your details to hand.
Please do not have anything to do with DFD they are vultures praying on the vulnerable. Take it from me....i nearly did a IVA with them;).
Well done you for helping your mum.
Oh and do not worry about that holiday too much. I took one in the july of the same year i went bc.Unless of courseit is megga expensive, then that may get frowned upon, but nothing bad would happen.DxFree impartial debt advice available from: National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000 | The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111 | Find your local Citizens Advice Bureau

Im going to speak to CCCS or CAB or maybe the debt line for my mum and see if we can take it from there.
So it wont matter if my mum paid her holiday off on her credit card? It wouldn't affect anything? They are looking at changing it to a weeks holiday instead of 2 weeks so its cheaper. Do you think they should stick to this or would be better to downgrade to a weeks holiday.

Wouldnt worry too much about the holiday unless its something that was mega super expensive...i'd booked 2wks away on credit cards when I went bust over 2yrs ago...and it was NEVER questioned
Unfortunatley you cant speak to CAB over the phone...nothing to stop you trying to ring for an appt...same as others though they're very busy so keep trying! We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0 -

Depends......you'd have to look in the tenancy agreements to see IF there was a bankruptcy clause...and no debts owing rent?.. a fair few people here have managed to stay in rented houses with no probs during bankruptcyWe all die.
