Hi,
Does anyone know how much VAT, duty etc. you have to pay on a 50gram packet of rolling tobacco from the EU to the UK?
Is it worth bringing extra home above your personal allowance and pay the tax?
I am going on holiday soon and need to save on my expensive habit.
Thanks

Have a look at this link :-

Generally speaking, you can bring in as much as you like into the UK provided you purchased the goods somewhere else in the EU - however, for alcohol and fags, the UK impose a restricition to the 'unlimited' amount!.
The above link tells you what those limits are, for rolling tobacco it is 3kg (wich is an awful lot). You can bring more in BUT you must be able to prove it is for your OWN use (ie, if you tell them you smoke 30 a day, HMRC will work out ho many roll ups you get from say 40kg and if it works out that'll last you 15 years then they'll assume you intend to sell i on the black market (as tobaco has a shelf life of no more than 1 year in HMRC's view).
So provided you keep the receipts and the amount is not over 3kg, you'll be okay - otherwise, your import will be subject to import duty (which will no doubt go up at Wednesdays budget) and VAT at 15%.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
Bear in mind the Canary Islands are Non EU, when we came back in April through East Mids airport they were scanning cases and confiscating cigarettes0

Just a thought... why not trip down to your local NHS support service (or go online at www.smokefree.nhs.uk) and get nicotine replacement on prescription... will save you a fortune and your lungs (and every other part of your body) will thank you for it.
