tax and stuff..

Options
Hey guys,

I'm considering signing up to some survey sites and review sites to try and earn a bit of extra money, but I'm a bit confused as to what I need to do about tax. I know I would need to sort that out for things like mystery shopping and tutoring, but does that apply to everything I do? What about selling stuff on ebay and amazon and the like?

Sorry if that is a stupid question, but I just don't want to get caught out!!

I am of the opinion that declaring oneself as self employed is a benefit as one claims against tax before it is paid. If you intend to earn money from any source other than a "paid wage job," then it is best to declare everything to the tax authorities. By doing on line surveys, you must have internet access and can claim these expenses against tax. I do mystery shopping and need access to the internet for my instructions, and, to print the questionnaires & instructions. Some companies phone me up for results. That means that I can claim a phone line, broadband, printer ink, paper and etc against tax. There is a limit set that one must earn above to pay national insurance contributions, so this need not be an expense.

If in doubt, contact your local tax office for advice. They are generally very helpful if you just ask.

For the paltry amount of income you get from surveys you should be able to declare it on your usual tax form - there is a section there for "any other income" although the toe-rags change the design of the form every year so well done if you can find it easily.
Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...
