I have £50 pounds in old style £5 notes ( From 1970's 80's) . I know you can't spend them in shops but is there a way of converting them to the newer syle or are they just waste paper now ?

You should be able to change them at the bank. Or you could always sell them on Ebay to collectors.(".)0

If the banks wont change them, you can send them to the bank of england and they will exchange them for the new style notes. SO you will get your £50 back
have a look at http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/about/exchanges.htm on the form you need to get your money back. Hope that helps you0 -
Any bank where you hold an account will exchange them for you £ for£0
