Help I seem to have two tax codes!!

Hoping someone can help, First time ever posting so please bear with me lol! Basically I am of average PAYE earner, no second job, savings just plain PAYE. June 2008 I received a letter advising me that from this year I will be asked to start completing a tax return, I don't fall into the criteria they suggested but was told legally if one is sent then I have to fill in and return. So this year arrives and I receive a tax return pack, I have nothing to hide so I start to fill in and realise that on the form it does not mention anywhere my NI number, and the tax reference number on the top left hand corner is a 10 digist number ( all consisting of numbers ) but knowhere on my wage slips and P60 does this number show, all it shows is my employer's PAYE reference which is for example ***/** again all consisting of numbers. I am concerned about filling this in now in case they have mixed me up with someone else or is it normal to have two different numbers?

It is if you're both PAYE and SA. The 10 digit reference (ending in 'K') is the SA Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) by which you're known under SA. Occasionally it will also bear the Employers Reference (Empref) .. but obviously not in your case.
The read across should be the fact that the office issuing the SA material is also (but not in every case) your PAYE office (as from P60)?

The 10 digit number is your unique taxpayer reference which, as the name suggests, is unique to you under the self assessment system. It means you don't get mixed up with someone else. Your employer will not know you have this number and your employer will have his own PAYE reference which is the one shown on your P60.

Although it's not unusual for there only to be the UTR on the front of the form I would check if it is really for you especially if there is someone with the same initials at the same address. You wouldn't believe the number of mixups there are due to parents giving their kids names with the same initials as themselves or each other.

Update: I have phoned today and the gentleman is adamant the form is for me and no mix-up with anyone else, however as one has been sent I must fill it in, but he is just as confused as me as to why I am being asked to fill one in, however he said as my affairs are straight forward once I return the form it should be flagged up that I don't need to fill one in again - phew the form looks so big and scary lol
