Aromatherapy blend help please!

Options
I have a few oils which I would like to try and make some relaxing type blends with instead of buying expensive pre mixes.
The oils I have are:
Lavender
Clary sage
Mandarin
Tea Tree
Lemon
Ylang Ylang
Bergamot
Frankinsense
Juniperberry
Geranium

Can anyone suggest any good blends as I'm loathe to experiment incase I waste any of my oils on a stinky mess :o

I also have a bottle of boots base, bath and body oils as well as a bottle of sweet almond carrier oil.

thankyou in advance for any replies ;)

I'm not an aromatherapist but have used lots of essential oils in the past.
Off the top of my head, the relaxing ones of those are:
Lavender - my favourite all time.
Clary Sage - if I remember rightly is especially good for period pain.
    Geranium
    Ylang-ylang

The citrus ones - mandarin, lemon, bergamot are pick me ups.
Tea tree - I tend to keep for colds and when I need an antiseptic as its not a fragrancy smell.
I've never used Juniperberry or Frankinsense.

When you mix them, they are synergistic, so the potencies are increased.
I think you could mix lavender with any of Clary sage, Geranium, or Ylang ylang and they would go well together. Lavender and Ylang ylang together make a very sensual aphrodisiac blend ;)

Lavender and Tea-tree mixed would be great if you're fighting a cold.
When mixing, add 1 drop per 1 ml of sweet almond oil (maximum) to make a massage oil. You can make up about 10 ml each time you need it if you want some variety.
Or you can put up to 4-5 drops of neat oil (total) in a bath - stay in for at least 20 mins to let it soak in.

    I hope that helps :)

Most of those should compliment each other well - although as Sharra says, tea tree is not the best smelling oil and is best used for medicinal purposes. I sometimes put a couple of drops into a skin toner.

It's just a question of finding which ones you prefer to put together - for example, I tend to use Frankincense, Myrrh and Sandalwood together if I fancy an exotic smelling blend, if I am feeling aching I put Lavender, Rosemary and Lemongrass in my bath (Lavender and Rosemary for the aches and pains, Lemongrass for it's wonderful smell).
  • Hi, I am studying aromatherapy at the moment and would say that whatever blend you use be very careful with clary sage! The reason it is so good for period pains is because it is a muscle relaxant and therefore relaxes the muscles that are contracting and causing the pain. If used in too high a dose (especially in the bath with hot water) you can relax your muscles too much and not be able to get up for a while! Believe me, I used it in the bath once and ended up being pulled out and put to bed.

Funny now but not at the time. Use no more than 3 drops in 100ml carrier oil.

One of my favourite blends is frankincense, geranium and bergamot.

As for the dosage, I'll guess you're in the 12-65 age category :p in which case, 10 drops of essential oil for every 20mls of oil is adequate.

If you're putting it in the bath, around 7 drops is fine - though if you haven't tried a particular blend before, add it to a little carrier oil or shampoo first.

Thank you to every one who replied. I'm trying a few ideas this weekend.

Now for the next question, where's the best place to get 10ml bottles to store my blends? I have 2 left from my starter kit and to be honest, the dropper lids aren't that great.
Any suppliers I have found online so far only seem to be interested in bulk buys, so it's not really good for me who only wants one or two.

Also, before anyone suggests it, I'm not an Ebay user!!!

I used to go to a shop called Meadows who were always very helpful - they have an online shop and the bottles are pretty cheap although I haven't used their online service.

Off for a look now, thanks :)

Just dawned on me now, I'm going to ask my local pharmacist as well to see if they can supply anything suitable :)
