Fuel card Tax

Hello

Hoping for some advice on Tax and my fuel card.

I have a fuel card through work, which I can use for all business and personal miles.

I don't have a company car (I get an allowance).

What is the deal with tax? What do i pay/ when?

Our Finance team, who are not helpful, tell me I can do some type of tax claim for to claim money back for milage. Which seems odd as i don't pay for it?

Anyone have any ideas?

Seems to me that's a benefit in kind. You should be paying tax on that benefit. Maybe they mean that you're paying too much tax on this benefit and therefore should have a refund.

Not to be funny, but while people here can know the generalities of your situation and point you in the right directions, you really do need to speak to this "finance team" about what it is you're actually receiving and what tax you're paying on that, regardless of whether or not you think they're 'helpful'.

Clearly its a benefit in kind. More I was asking if its Taxed through PAYE or will I get a tax bill following this years P11D?

The claim I can do is for using my own car for work purposes, tax releif on the mileage I believe, this sounds odd as I am not paying for said milage so how can I claim for it?

    1. It cannot be taxed through PAYE as the money is not paid to you. The benefit should be reported on the P11D and you can declare the B-I-K on your Self Assessment Tax Return.

2.You are paying for the fuel from taxed income - both salary and B-I-K. You can, therefore, claim for using your own car for business purposes - @ 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter. You can look at this another way to come back to the same result - you will pay tax on the fuel costs borne by the company; would it not be a case of double taxation to take the fuel costs paid by the employer into account again when calculating the expenses due to you?
