Electrician training- is it worth it?

I'm struggling to get a job at the moment, and have always thought that I'd like to train as an electrician. However I'm too old for apprenticeships (I'm 27 and there are hardly any adult ones going), so I'm thinking about doing some kind of courses to get me qualified.

If I do get the C&G certificates (or equivalent) I'm worried that I still wont be able to get a job as I've been told by loads of people that experience is more important than qualifications.

So, is it worth doing the courses? I don't want to end up 2 or 3 years older and still be in the same situation I am in now.

Do employers take on 'older' applicants with the C&G but without experience?

Any advice?

Doing both electrician & plumbing may be beneficial

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it ....

You might be better off finding a company who could take you on and that way you get some experience

tbh mate im a sparkie, and i have been out of work for the last 7 months, the situation at the moment is really bad, you are better ringing around local companys telling them you want to work as an electricians mate, then you will get hands on experiance. probably wont get much money though, as its generally based on experiance
  • my son is doing an apprenticeship at the moment, since sept, he attends college 1 day a week and had to arrange his own work placement, but the electrician himself has been struggling to find work since around december! my son has not had any luck finding another employer to take him on so its looking like the apprenticeship thing is up the creek!

Your difficulty will be getting the site experience to get your NVQs. Do you have any contacts in this line of work?

maybe you should try this "british gas academy". google it as cant post links.

i work for BG and did my apprenticeship through them 3 years ago (Took 1 year) and now earning around 35-40k per year-14k first year. well worth it if u dont have experience.

P.s it is really hard to get into as lots of people apply. u never know.
