Nursery fabric suggestions

Hi there, we are expecting our first child in July and are busy getting the [STRIKE]office[/STRIKE] nursery sorted, we bought some lovely curtains from Ikea and they are huuuuuuuge, so we will have loads of material left over.

Anyone got any suggestions on what we could do with it, the wife says cushions, bit boring imo, didn't know if any of you guys had some more exciting suggestions. I thought about stretching it over a canvas frame and hanging it up, not sure if it will work or not though.

We also need a blind to go behind the curtains, maybe a 'blackout' one, can these be made? or sourced cheaply?

Also some instructions would be good...... ;):D

Many many thanks in advance :A

if you are buying an ottoman for the toys (trust me within a year you will be able to kit out a toyshop!1) you can either make a simple padded top - wadding and then staple fabric under the lid and trim the edges, or amke a removeable flattish cusion for the top of it.

You wont need striaght away but you could make pillow slips for when they start to use pillows or trim up some plain bedding for when they move to quilt / pillow at about 2 years.

Have you made tie backs for the curtains.

Also you could make some bunting with simple triangles and white tape fabric / bias binding for edgeing shelves like this http://www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/detailfash.php?type=FASH&code=A7268&proddesc=Pink+Gingham+Spot%2FStripe+Bunting&supercategory=&branch=&wcategory=&catdesc=&treecode=TRE00009 or you could just hang it round walls for decoration.

Thats all I can think of for now

Also you could make a nappy storer/stacker, we bought one in the humphreys corner range for our nursery a couple of years ago, but think it would be quite easy to make something similar, link below if my post is making no sense!!

  • Just a note from personal experience but my daughter almost suffocated herself on our cot bumper so be careful.

    Patchwork quilts are nice.

Argos have blackout blinds that aren't too expensive, depending on how big your window is. 2ft wide is about £5, 4ft is about £9.

We got our blinds from Tesco Direct and cut them down. Could use the cloth for bean bags or some jolly bunting to hang round the room :)

ikea sells cheap black out blinds, another vote for bunting and buy a cheap plain duvet set and use the fabric to trim it then once your LO moves to a bed it will still co-ordinate. Also toy bag like a big shoe bag to hand on a peg rail.

Cot tidys are easy to make too and will come in really handy to keep muslins, baby wipes, lotions etc. I also love my nappy stacker so if you can make one that would be ideal!

Wow, thanks for all of the replies, the bunting definitely sounds like a great idea.

Nitha - Have you got a pictue of what you mean by a 'cot tidy' it sounds good, just not sure what sort of thing you mean!!

Patchwork - We weren't planning on getting a bumper anyway, a coule of people had said they could be dangerous and don't really serve a purpose.

The plain duvet set sounds an ace idea, no idea how you would go about doing it, but definitely a plan!!

    Thanks to all again

Umm, matalan do them I think their may be a picture on their website. Basically it's a rectangle with little pockets in it (mine has three pockets) that has two tabs that velcro over the cot rungs.

I agree that bumpers aren't much use - never had the near suffocation issue, but my ds used to pull them down all the time which was very annoying!
