Asda online shop, total £ different

This is the 1st time i have used asda online as they've only recently included my village. For people who use them i would like your help to if this info sounds right.

So ordered yesterday for delivery slot today, late last night total of £76.25 came out of my bank account. Shopping delivered today, 1 item not available and 2 subs which cost less. Total was £71.69, so i need a refund of £4.56.

I rang them up and the 1st person i don't think understood what i was saying, she just kept repeating telling me £71.69 would come out of my bank. So i rang back and the 2nd person said the following:

That £76.25 would be held by my bank, they sent the request through to make sure the funds are available. Then when the driver gets back and confirms the actual cost as some people don't want the subs etc thats the amount that is taken from my bank. He said i wouldn't be charged twice and within 7-10 days i should see on my statment the actual cost.

Is this what happens??? If i am charged twice, 2nd at £71.69 it will put me overdrawn and im a little confused as to why id be charged before being sure what the true cost was.

Has this happened to anyone else???

I bank with natwest and they're always instant with taking money out with card transactions.

I thought they just gave you a refund of any returns. I'm waiting for the same from Sainsbury's, delivery man said it would take a day or two which is fine then I'm expecting a few pounds of refunds. No probs!

I think most companies take payment before delivery just in case you don't have the funds! There's no way they will charge you twice!

  • As long as i am not charged twice thats fine, thats what im more concerned about, im not bothered if it takes a few days to get the £4.56 refunded.

No you won't be charged twice. They amend the amount to come out after your shopping has been delivered.

thats right they hold the amount thats calculated on line but only take out what the final total is after delivery,
  • I've had a similar issue with Asda. I use an Electron card to pay for my shopping and what Asda do is 'reserve' the cost of your shop to make sure you have enough money in your account to pay for your shopping. Then, when the cost of the delivery is confirmed they charge that amount to your account - refunds get sorted a few days later.

But...they don't remove the original reservation from your account for about a week so you can find yourself in the position of actually having funds in your account but you can't access them because Asda has first call on them - even though the payment for your shop has been taken from your account.

I found this out when I had an emergency and needed to pay for a taxi to pick DS up from school (country area, buses only run every two hours). I knew I had the funds available but the ATM wouldn't let me have any money. What I do now is check online and when the Asda payment goes out of my account I call my bank (Cooperative) and tell them to release the funds.

You don't actually go overdrawn when Asda do this but you can't withdraw the funds until they have been 'released', which can be a pain at the end of the month.
Don't judge people on they way they look, the way they speak or what they're called because they can't help that.

Only judge people on what they say and what they do.
  • I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I read this discussion!!

Last week I did my 4th online shopping order with Asda and there was a couple of substitutions and a few things not delivered but I was given the final amount by Asda and the money was taken out of my account. All OK!!

Then I went to withdraw some money from the cashpoint on Saturday and I had 90 pounds less than I thought. I rang my bank (Co-operative) who said the was a debit card payment pending from last week but they couldn't tell me who was asking for the money(!!)
When I said that the only time I had recently used this card was Asda online the assistant said it was probably that - and that Asda reserve an amount and then take the final amount when the shopping is delivered!

I didn't notice that this happened with the previous online shopping I have done and I was convinced this was not right and my card had been used in some sort of fraud!!!!

I have been panicking all weekend! Even though the bank assistant took the reserve off the money she told me that if requested, the amount would still be paid out up to 10 days after the initial request.

It is such a massive relief to know that it is Asda.

Thank you for putting my mind at rest.......(and my hubby said thanks as well as I have been moaning and complaining about it to him all weekend!!)

    What a weird system.
Just for comparisons sake. Sainsburys took the whole shop amount around the time of delivery, I sent back a couple of items and two days later I recieved an e-mail to say they had refunded the corresponding amount. I must confess I haven't looked on-line to check it's arrived yet will do so shortly. I'm sure it's OK.
I didn't realise shops could hold money 'in reserve'. It seems totally wrong that they can then allow an 'overlap' and make people short of money.
I would suggest those involved complain. I don't use Asda myself and have no plans to so no point in me saying anything.
