Meal after wedding ideas?

We have finally found a nice venue that we can afford and that can accomodate our guests. Its only a newly built cons club but its just what we're after.

The only problem is, although they can cater for our cold buffet in the evening they cannot cater for the meal inbetween due to lack of facilities and no crockery.

We were hoping for a simple 3 course, perhaps soup, roast dinner, and a light pud.

Now we dont know what to do.

H2B though of a hog roast but after making enquiries we cannot fit it into our already pushed budget.

What can I feed my guest inbetween the ceromony and the evening reception? We haven't set the date yet, doing it on Wednesday with the Rev. So will try and push for a late ceremony to help, but I still want to feed them, as there will be 17 children including my own who I know will want food.

I dont want to go ahead and book the venue without coming up with a viable idea first.

Our next option would cost us over £1900 so you can see why I need some ideas.

Have you set the timings for your ceremony - if not push it to later in the afternoon and then start the buffet earlier and have this as your wedding breakfast?

Another reasonable idea possibly would be to have an English tea party, sandwiches, quiche and scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream (this, however, would mean two cold meals).

I admit that I am at a loss as to them saying that they can cater for the cold buffet but have no crockery - are they going to serve it on paper plates?

Try and see if you can find a council-run venue as these are more likely to have catering facilities and will be reasonably priced.

What facilities are available to you? If they have a microwave, or if you can take your own microwave you could still serve soup and a light pudding, plus you could cook the vegetables for the roast.

Do you have a supermarket nearby that does roast chickens? Maybe you could arrange something and have a set number pre-ordered and ready for collection on the day at a set time?

As for crockery, i really wouldn't worry yet. You can usually pick up sets from supermarkets, ikea or matalan really cheaply. Just keep your eye out and grab a bargain. Then either sell it on afterwards, or for the cheap price you paid, donate it to charity or freecycle.

The only thing i can't work out is the yorkshires and roast potatoes. Not sure how they would turn out if you cooked them the night before and microwaved them. Do you have a family member or friend nearby that could cook them? Maybe boiled potatoes with herb butter would work better.

Have a good think about ways of using a microwave to either cook or reheat. You could also get those part baked rolls (to go with the soup) and cook them the night before or have someone cook them that morning.

    Good luck

What time of year are you getting married?? It it's summer, perhaps a hot meal isn't neccessary?

Alternatively, is there outside space for a barbeque? Crockery wise, there are companies such as this ....http://www.place-settings.com who might be worth contacting - but I have NO idea of the cost, so that one might bea silly suggestion!

Could you convince a local pub to deliver some pub grub?
Or would you be happy with fish and chips if you could preorder at the chip shop?

I know it isn't the nice 3 course meal you were after but it would be a talking point!

How many guests are you wanting to feed - I may have other suggestions depending on how many people?

thanks for the ideas so far.

Have thought about a bbq, going to the venue later so will ask if we could possibly use a section of the car park. There will be 27 adults and 17 children for the meal.

have been looking at other venues but they are so costly.

I take it you're looking around Manchester from your info? We got married round there so have looked at loads too. Whereabouts are you looking and what's your budget? I may know of a couple of places from our search.
