Post Office compensation for letters, etc delivered late

Does anybody know if it is possible to claim compensation (and how much) for items delivered late?

I sent a CD to Ireland by ‘Signed For; about a month ago, and it has not been delivered yet.

Thank you so much.

    Hi SoScrooge

Not a very helpful reply, I'm afraid, but the only time I had this problem with the Post Office was when they "lost" my "signed for" insurance claim for a holiday in 2003 when I was ill and I had to claim on insurance for medical expenses. They sent me a book of 12 x 1st class stamps to apologise for losing my "signed for" package (which was not terribly useful as I was trying to claim £500+, so a book of stamps for approximately £3 did not make me feel any better(!!).

In my case, it turned out that the package was actually delivered 43 days after I posted it so I did get compensated from the insurance company (plus the book of 12 1st class stamps from the P.O. - whooppeee!!!). I can't recommend what to do in the case of total loss, but I will keep my fingers crossed that your package turns up and is delivered late, like mine was...!

    Hi SoScrooge,

There has been a recent postal strike in Northern Ireland that may have affected what you sent.

Have a look at these threads for ideas on wether or not you can claim compensation:

Either way this topic is not really suited to the Old Style board, so I will move it to the I wanna board, to see if you get more replies.

My daughter sent off for a full copy of her birth certificate about 8 weeks ago, we havent as yet received it. We had to go in person to the registry office and pay for another one but they gave us a form to fill in to claim compensation from the post office and their proof of postage.

We got the form home and from the way the form was worded, it should have been filled in by the registry office as they wanted details of how it was sent and other things that only the sender would know.

The form is still in the drawer gathering dust as we speak.

I have claimed from the post office loads of times, when I was sending stuff sold on ebay, I haven't done it for ages, but they have a claim form on their website.
I think the rule of thumb is that you can claim 10 times the amount of postage, obviously if it is insured that's a diiferent matter, to claim a lost special delivery item it has to not have been delivered 10 days after posting.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
