Mortgages for temps, help!

Hi,
I am in full-time, permanent employment and have been in this job for 10 years. My husband was also employed full-time for 10 years, but recently had a break to look after our baby for 6 months. He's now back at work on a similar type of job as before, but as a temp. There is high demand for workers in his field, so he won't struggle to get a job. Our credit rating is very good, 471 out of 500. We own our house outright.
OK, now the problem. We've had an offer accepted on a house we want to buy, on the grounds that we don't have to sell our current house first (we'll sell it later) and can complete quickly. A building society gave us a mortgage promise based on our combined income, being fully aware of my husband's employment situation.
Now that we want to process the mortgage, this building society seems uncomfortable about my husband's temporary contract, and wants assurances it will be renewed. He'll never be without a job, but nobody can put that in writing for him. What can we do if they refuse us the mortgage? Do you know a mortgage provider that will accept my husband's earnings towards the mortgage amount? Or is it impossible in this economic climate? He's been temping for 2 months only, has had it extended for another 6 weeks or so. He has every confidence it will be extended after that, but it will be for short periods at a time.
Any ideas? I panick we won't be able to buy this other house, and the vendors won't be able to buy their house because of us. That'd make me feel so guilty -

How long has he been in this temporary job? Some companies was to see him be in this job for at least 1 year. Some two years, and some 3 years.
Due to the recession happening many companies don't actually have temp jobs left. Banks and building societies know this.
Has you other property got a mortgage on it? If so, that will be the main reason they won't borrow.
This scenario will have popped up many of times.
Good luckMotto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'
Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!

Hi, he's only been temping for a couple of months. But he's a social worker, and there is always plenty of demand for that. And his employing record is quite impressive.
It's funny, when he took time off to look after our baby we never thought it would have this long-term impact on our lifes...0
