Cuture shock for me too. My ex prefered to eat at the table all the time. I didn't - this was mainly because our relationship had been in trouble from the outset... 5years lol

Now my new lady friend is a pleasure to have a conversation with, but I still find it very difficult to have a meal at the table - I'm a chatty person and my job is dull so it's difficult to have a conversation every night. Hopefully the lodger will help some = )

I always get more left overs when I plate up!!!

I try to let the family help themselves as much as I can - but they seem to have no idea on what a portion size is!! Last night I did Roast chicken, new potatoes, green beans and brocolli. The door rang - and I went to answer it, I came back and dinner was ALL SERVED OUT..... No chicken left over for the pie I was planning today and worst still - no bones for stock!

    Arghhh

well after reading through this thread you have all inspired me to having tea at the table which we normally do anyway if not the breakfast bar but in bowls tonight where as I would normally dish out everyones portion we are having roast lamb and all the trimmings for all the family so I will just dish up meat tonight and let everyone else help themselves to potatoes and veg might have to make double gravy though!!

There's only two of us, so it's plated up, we both know how much the other eats/how hungry we are.

i normally plate up in the kitchen only because i know how much we'll all eat and because i dont have any 'serving' type bowls.

My mum does it in serving bowls when we descend on her for dinner and its nice although i find i take too muc.

plated up on trays on laps infront of TV
That's how I always ate as a child (though had a buffet with plate on when I was younger...still sitting on sofa) as we didn't have a table and chairs of our own until I was about 14, we borrowed one for Christmas dinner!
partner has always had dinner at the table so was a shock for me when I first went to his house and met his parents.
I do like eating at the table, want to do it when we have a family (and a dining room!) but the table at the moment has my laptop on and is covered in work which is a bit sad really...should make it a goal to eat at the table once a week perhaps...be posh!

Well I've been mixed. When we first started out we didn't have room or cash for dining table, so was always on knees. Kids had a little table, when they got older used the breakfast bar in the kitchen. More recently I've invested in a dining table and moved other furniture out to do this. It's in the living room but a corner and classed as 'dining area' here now. Downside is keping it clear, everyone, inc me sometimes :o uses it to dump things on and because DP couldn't be bothered to move his laptop tonight he sat alone with his on his knee which wound me up a bit! I got to sit next to his laptop which he left running, joy!

As for serving, usually on plates, if it's just me and DP sometimes serving dishes but without a dishwasher and being the only person who washes up puts me off.

With the kids I've recenltly put them on smaller plates and plate up less for them as a significant amount was being wasted. If I allowed them to help themselves they would eat their favourite bit and nothing else. Tried it, didn't work, gave up.
One day I might be more organised...........

As a rule, we eat at the table, the food plated up beforehand. However, we do have the odd occassion when we eat on our laps in front of the tv!!!
At Christmas, i always serve up our dinner in individual bowls for us to help ourselves but there is always loads left over because i cook more so we can have bubble and squeak on boxing day. It just makes it a bit more special on a special day!!!
