CeMap Qualification

Hi there,
I notice there are a few Mortgage Advisers / IFAs on here and my question is to them.

I am about to sit my last exam for the CeMap Qualification, once qualified I want to gain experience before going out into the world and giving 'advice', can any of you advise me on how best to go about getting this experience?

I also plan to complete the Advanced CeMap and the CeRGI qualification as feel the more strings I have to my bow the better, but what I really want to achieve is to be in a postition where I am confident that I am giving people the best advice possible for them.

Thanks,,,

  • My advice is to get yourself taken under the wing of a good experienced "reputable" broker.

Everyone needs the qualifications, and it is the first place to start, but, the real education starts out in the field when you learn the skills and knowledge that add value to your clients.

Good Luck, it's a tough business, but one that, given the right business model will look after you.

I am a fee charging WoM Mortgage broker.
I now no longer give information and opinion within the Mortgage boards, because a number of posters who, having approached me professionally, agreed my fee-which has been been made very clear at the outset, taken my advice (normally cancelling a [home visit] meeting at short notice) have then approached one of the fee-free brokers on here to arrange the very same deal I have advised.
Whilst I totally concur with the ethos of "money saving"- abusing the goodwill of a professional who provides a quality service is taking it too far!

    Spot on SS,

Couldnt have said it better myself. CeMAP alone doesn't make you a good Mortgage Broker. That comes from hard work, having a thick skin, blood sweat and tears.

i am actually taking my CeMAP mod one exam shortly (employer says i have to complete all of them in 3mths start to finish!) and afterwards i will look at taking my advanced CeMAP - i have a mtge advisor position so will be gaining experience but do you still think doing the advanced CeMAP is worth it?
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,
would love to win something 'proper'!!

Hi there, I myself am taking the Advanced one because I have an interest in Sub Prime and Commercial mortgages, also it can't hurt to be armed with more info...

Good Luck with the 3 month deadline, I've taken mine over 6 months - but have no experience at all in the field, I come from an IT Security background.
  • Hi there,

i am currently do my cemap exams and actually took my 1st cemap exam today (module1), i passed unit 1 but failed unit 2. i found that the questions on the actual exam were totally different and MUCH harder than the ones on the specimen papers, as these were fairly easy. i've looked all over the internet for questions similar to the ones that were in the exam but they are all the same as the specimen papers.
does any1 know if the Competence Development Tool (CDT) cd from the IFS directly, has similiar questions as the real exam? or would they be the same as the specimen papers. just really need to know if its worth buying the cd as it costs £166. the test is so hard!!
    thanks.
  • Well you know there is always ebay (wink).

As for the first poster: Banks, Building Societies and large brokers.
CeMAP alone does not cut the mustard. You need experience.
  • hi, i've bought one lot of test papers from ebay, but it was questions similar to those of the spec papers, which dont really indicate how hard the real exams will be. do you know if the CDT cd from IFS will have the real exam qs?
  • The CD does not have the real exam questions. But they are similar to the type you will get on the real thing, except for Cemap 3 which was a little bit different and there i suggest you get the paper based questionnaires.

The real questions are harder, but if you studied well you will pass easily.

Hello, the ifs CDT is not like the real exam at all, the questions on the CDT are a lot easier. When I wrote the exams I did get maybe 10 questions out of the 100 that were the same, but most of them were completely different and a lot harder. It's OK to use the CDT to test your overall knowledge, like using any study tool, but try to find a CDT (***a current one) maybe from Ebay or by asking around. Try not to spend the whole £166 if you can at all help it. I did my CeMAP 1 by home study and found it too hard and isolating, so took a CeMAP 2&3 course through 'Training R Us' www.trainingrus.co.uk and passed both first time and with 2 merits in CeMAP 2 and almost a merit in CeMAP 3. It was the best £499 I ever invested. GOOD LUCK!!! ~ BLUroma
