Laptop Advice Anyone??

I hope someone out there can help me with this - I'm a bit of a technophobe I'm afraid!

For space saving reasons I have to get rid of my pc & use a laptop at home instead, but I have absolutely no idea which one to get.
The choice seems to be endless & I don't know where to start, or even the best place to buy it from.

The only advice I've had so far is to go for one with at least 500 somethings of memory (told you I was clueless - is it mb?) and that Dell are quite good. Could anyone else enlighten me further?

I really don't want to spend more than £500 - £600, is that realistic?

Thanks in advance!
