We had some bad news today - my car which is only 4 years old needs a new steering pump which is going to cost 700!!!! I have had to leave it in the garage as there is no way i have this sort of money and dont know what to do. So much for modern cars!!

It never rains but it pours. I have savings in my change tin of approx 28 total - bit off the 700 required!

Oh no... sorry to hear about the car , but keep going you are doing really well with everything else! :T

Regarding your car, my OH says that sounds too much to pay for a steering pump..... was that a quote from a garage? If so, the majority of that will be labour charges. If you tell me the car and the year, he'll find out how much the part costs to check you're not being ripped off. If you don't want to post that info on the thread, feel free to private message me.

I'm sorry to hear about your car :(

With regards to your store cards, I know it's bad to rob Peter to pay Paul, but can't you transfer the debt to 0% somewhere? Maybe an existing card etc.?
  • Thanks so much for your replies re the car disaster - i have had some excellent news as the part is covered under warranty and will now only cost me 50quid for the diagnostic check - how fantastic is that!!!! Phew!
Now wondering what to do with car - should i sell it and pay some debts off with the balance and get an old banger and just insure it third party and if it needs anything doing just scrap it and get another old banger from auctions or something. I am gutted that a car that is only just 4 years old costs 700quid to put right and worried now about other stuff going on it! What a mither and a worry isnt it all!
Re store cards, i dont have access to any cards with 0% interest as i struggle to get credit - i pay my bills on time and regularly but still the b'ruptcy is a shadow over me after all these years.
I already work 2 jobs and babysit the majority of weekends (thank goodness) but am now seeking a part time bar job or something too to help.

sell it and pay off some debts ,is a good idea, then you will sleep better, and when you park it at a Supermarket you will not be worried about it getting a bump ,a banger is not going to depreciate, cars are just money drains and status symbols, good luck

  • I think you are right - i do spend my entire time worrying about the car - particularly as my son drives it too!!!
I am very grateful for your help!
  • I have been thinking and wonder what people's veiws are on this -
What about if i ask my mortgage company to extend my loan for an additional 5 years and also put my secured loan on to my mortgage. I realise that this will extend my term and all that goes with it but it would free up some money to live on! I am with SPML and just wonder if there would be collossal charges for this and also i have redemption penalties until Feb 07 so wonder if they would kick in. The interest rate would be lower than the rate for the secured loan which is approx 9%. Does anyone have any ideas/experience of SPML or anything???? Many thanks again!
