Occupational Pension vs ISA/savings

Hi,
I have been trying to research this but the more I find out the less I understand.
I am currently a member of an occupational (NHS) pension. I now find myself in the privileged position of having some extra cash each month that is surplus. My only outstanding debt is my mortgage.
My question is should I invest the cash into my pension as I am able to pay more into it or should I invest the money into an ISA or other type of savings account or overpay my mortgage? I don't have the nerve for shares etc. so the savings option would have to be a safe option.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S.
Does anyone know any links that explain pensions
Thanks in advance

Do you have a "rainy day" cash savings fund?
If not, then the ISA would be appropriate first, to build that up.Trying to keep it simple...
