Further to MArtin's post on Office for £40, there are extra freebies if you are of a geeky persuasion (i.e. you are or want to be a programmer).
Microsoft's Dreamspark program lets anyone who is in full tile uk education download Microsoft's Developer Studio packages and more, for absolutley nothing!
This is a serious amount of money's worth, so might be useful to thos so inclined.
