My husband says I should write a cook book
I know I can feed 3 adults on £25 a week 3 meals a day 2 course evening meals every day

You should certainly start a blog and put up your shopping lists and daily menus. Your writing style is good and it would make interesting and informative reading. And there's been more than one book deal clinched on the basis of a good blog!

blimey how on earth does one person live on food for £20!
Me and my husband plus my dog in our huse i spend £160 a wk!
I know u can buy cheap pasta ect but u cant live on that forever
I must say my bill has gone up about £20:rolleyes:

£20 is 1/3 of JSA for 1 person. Its called needs must.
The op has a choice; get into debt to buy food or spend within their means.

I used to spend £500pm, for 4 adults, I could afford it very comfortably, add wine on top, never had an own brand anything.

Things are different now, I lost my job, like many others here, so now I try to spend £280-£300 thats for anything that you can buy in MrS, including contact lens solution etc,

I have always cooked from scratch too, but you can make cheap or expensive meals, so now I have cheaper meals. I only buy free range so we have less meat.

If you can afford it to spend that level of money on food shopping and are happy to, that's fine too its your money, but think of all the extras you could enjoy if you brought it down a bit and put the money aside.

Why not try the grocery challenge, its quite addictive, and still eating well and healthily I bet you could cut your bill in half.

pop over to oldstyle and have a look;)

Aw shucks you made me blush
    Thank you

I wouldn't know where to start with a blog

All truth goes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Then, it is violently opposed. Finally, it is accepted as self-evident.

Try here. It is easy, honestly. It's set up for folk who don't know where to start, a bit like paint-by-numbers. You just fill in the missing bits and then after that it's like a diary, except you don't have to do it on a day to day basis.

And before someone says "Off Topic!!!", well, it might benefit the OP, no?

Cant you send him on JSA a couple of shopping vouchers help him out then? £160 on 2 and a dog you could go on holiday every month for that
  • I have only myself to feed and am on an apprenticeship so don't earn enough for extravagance...i spend about £20-£25 per week, could cut it down but I'm too fond of snacking on dried fruit and nuts! I spend a lot of time meal planning in order to have the right meals to make use of every last crumb of what i buy.

Those of you spending a very low budget on food, are you able to do a weekly meal planer and post here please. I can add subtract/modify to suit my tastes.
I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.

:Done bottle of wine and a case of larger in with it but we work hard so deserve a treat dont u think
And like i say i have family over for sunday dinner and odd occassions but when ur cooking for two few extra veg and spuds go a long way.
I still dont know how one person shops on £20 though id like to see the shopping list they get with it

It's difficult to post a shopping list for one week because certain things last a long time - for example in any week I might have meals based on rice, pasta, potatoes and noodles, but I wouldn't have to buy all those every week because I'd already have most of them in stock.

i buy oats, milk and sultanas to make porridge for breakfast, and I make homemade scones to take to work for lunch, with some tomatoes, carrot sticks, fruit and a homemade cake or biscuit.

for evening meals I might make a stir fry (8p noodles, soy sauce, cashews and veg) or pasta with a tomato/vegetable/lentils sauce, or veggie shepherds pie ( lentils and veg instead of mince), or stew (just veg cooked up with homemade dumplings), or spanish omlette....I cook a lot of things so I won't list them all but maybe that will explain it somewhat. I cook for my housemate sometimes but never have people round which I suppose cuts it down a lot.

I would be intrigued to know what you spend your £160 on ;) cos i have a huge appetite but doubt I could eat that much food! Everyone has their different ways though....there are people on the OS board who spend half or less of what I spend, and I NEVER understand how!

    Hiya :)

There's a weekly meal plan thread on the OS board which has lots of ideas - here is this week's:

and if you do a search it should bring up the previous ones. Hope that's helpful :)
