you can try and put the HDD in another pc and copy it accross to there. Failing that you can take it to a local computer shop and they should be able to get al/most of the data off the disc.
I recommend using this next time if you want to get rid of Windows Messenger.

Green....I tried various restore points earlier, to no avail.
Disk is Mesh Recovery Disk with full XP Pro with SP 2 included.
I booted to 'Diagnostic start up - load basic devices and sevices only'......that's how I finally got the xp disk to run and install the files........until it got to a file it couldn't that is, then it stopped and offered me the choice to continue with the install without this file. This happened 3 times. When it finished, I ended up with the hung xp screen.Herman - MP for all!0 -
It's back! I restarted the pc 3 times and it finally loaded windows! I can still see all my stuff. It's very sluggish but my stuffs still there!
I'm going to try to copy everything onto disk before I do anything else, assuming my drives still work.Herman - MP for all!0 -
After you get your data backed-up
Goto windows update - run it in custom mode - load the criticals then look on the left for the optional updates and hardware etc .. reboot as needed
Then ensure your 3rd party firewall and AV is not damaged and upto date.Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.0 -
Thank you...I'll do that. Nero is copying to a dvd data disk as I type - I am SO relieved.
Thank you to all who took the time to post.

More help please?
I got all my stuff backed up but pc still wouldn't work properly. Programs were shutting down on me and pc was freezing.
Updating did not help. It was still very sluggish.
Decided to reformat and reinstall. Done this loads of times before on different pcs so I didn't think it was a problem.
Everything went ok until the windows set up bit and then I got a screen telling me setup could not load ****** file. I got this message for 24 files (I wrote them all down).
Windows obviously hasn't installed as all I get is a black screen.
What's causing these files to not load? I have never come across this before.
Btw....I have tried 3 separate xp disks so it's obviously a pc issue and not a dodgy disk.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Tried reinstall again and got black screen/white writing......'windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. C:\windows\inf\biosinfo.inf.
Am I wasting my time here? Is this a shop repair job?Herman - MP for all!0 -

Did you manage to reinstall Windows without any warnings about Setup not being able to load files? Are you using a genuine Windows XP CD?0
