Creation Finance-any advice

I bought a car on finance october 2007 - I find myself now in a situation where my o/h has been made redundant and yes I can afford to pay it at the moment (£338 monthly) but there may be a time that I cannot (depending on how long it takes him to get another job!), I called creation today to ask what options there were for this situation, asked about possibly extending the terms for another year and lowering the payments, they stated there were no options only to go into arrears and then re-finance or agree a lower payment. I find this ridiculous! any advice anyone on what to do next? I don't want to be in a situation where I am in arrears and have them chasing me and don't want my credit score to go through the floor because of this,
