Hi Hope - bin a bit quiet - had a car accident! Like they say, it never rains....
Still, everyone was OK, just my car that's suffering!
I just wanted to share with you and your family the idea that since joining this site, money saving has become a real hobby with me actively thinking of ways to save money. Like you say, it's often the day to day stuff that you don't necessarily think about that is frittering away your pennies.
See if you can get the kids onto thinking about where you can save money - they may have some impractical ideas - but you never know, they may come up with a Brucie! (bonus) If they do, or they don't, either way, this will help them to start thinking in the right way!

> To make things worse because we earn so much my daughter who wants to go to college in Sept won't get any financial help and as she is quite clever and wants to go on to univesrsity will have to cope with huge debts for the next 5 years. I feel such a failure and can't believe I've got myself into this mess.
I can't offer much useful advice on the debt situation, but I can definitely help on this point. My parents' combined earning is also more than £20k per year, so I was not entitled to any financial help when I went to university. I've just finished my degree, it was a 3 year course - and I paid for it myself.
Don't worry about your daughter's financial situation; I can honestly say that I preferred it this way, it felt so good to take responsibility for my own education, and stand on my own two feet. I did part-time retail work throughout most of the two years and spent my money like all the other kids did  , and my debt isn't that big; the student loan amount is around £3,000 per academic year. Tuition fees are no more than £1,200 per academic year.
So your daughter is in a very similar position to me when I was 18, 3 years ago. If she's got the brains to go to university, I'd also bet that she's got the strength of character to handle all the obstacles that crop up along the way.
I hope this helps

Sorry to correct you, but as from September 2006, tuition fees are now £3,000 - there are loans available for students to cover this, alongside the regular student loans for living expenses.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance has lots of info & is quite easy to understand.
Don't forget that if you still have dependant children then there is an allowance made when calculating the parental financial contribution. Also, your daughter will be entitled to less if she lives at home & goes to a local Uni & she won't get travel expenses. My son is better off living away from home in Leeds than he would be staying here & studying locally.

Fair enough, thanks for pointing that out - I wasn't aware of it. Anyway the point I was trying to make was that I didn't expect my parents to pay for me, and I was happy to pay my own way at university. The main thing I was trying to get across is that it's not an impossible challenge, and it made me a stronger person. :j:heart2: All you need is love :heart2:0
